BC Veggie Day highlights hi-tech applications
All BC vegetable greenhouses rely on technology but some incorporate more technology than others. “If there’s new technology, I’m interested in it,” says Armand Vander Meulen of Bakerview Greenhouses in Aldergrove.
Bakerview was one of four greenhouses holding open houses during the BC Greenhouse Growers’ Association’s third annual BC Veggie Day, May 21, and Vander Meulen used the occasion to show the public and his fellow growers his new robotic wagon mover.
Bakerview is the first BC greenhouse to use a robotic system to move peppers from the greenhouses to the packing area. The electric powered cart attached to two wagons, each of which holds four bins, which in turn each hold about 500 pounds of peppers. A full load, therefore, moves about four tons of peppers at a time.
